VADOC Releases for Northampton Cases
Virginia Department of Corrections institutions form a statewide system, not a physical Northampton County facility. A person sentenced in Northampton may remain at Eastern Shore Regional Jail while awaiting state placement, then move to an institution elsewhere. The regional jail can record that movement as a release or transfer, but state incarceration continues. The VADOC record follows the individual and is the correct next channel.
The state locator covers more than people inside prison buildings. Its stated scope includes incarcerated people in VADOC institutions, people in local or regional jails under VADOC authority, institutional-hospital cases, Community Corrections Alternative Program participants, probationers, and parolees. A result after prison departure may therefore reflect supervision rather than confinement.
Important: A transfer from Eastern Shore Regional Jail to VADOC is continued custody, not a community release.
Search VADOC Release Information
The official VADOC Inmate & Supervisee Locator accepts either name information or a DOC number. For a name search, enter at least the first three letters of the first name and the full last name. A seven-digit DOC ID is the stronger identifier when known. Optional location, race, gender, and age filters can narrow results, but too many filters can hide the right record when one field changed or was entered differently.
- Open the official locator and acknowledge its disclaimer.
- Search with the seven-digit DOC ID, or use the required portions of the person's name.
- Use optional filters only after a broader search produces too many matches.
- Compare identity, location, and whether the entry indicates custody or community supervision.
- Read the release-date field as displayed, then verify whether it is future or past.
- Confirm actual release with VADOC paperwork or the responsible office.
VADOC says locator data update daily and may still be inaccurate or delayed. The current public detail-screen label for release-date information was not verifiable during research because the search uses a CAPTCHA. Do not rename it as “projected” or “tentative” unless the live result uses that label. A future date functions as a projection and can move.
VADOC Search Fields Explained
The locator's broad scope helps track a Northampton sentence across state custody and supervision. It also requires care. An entry with a district office is different from an entry with a prison or local jail. A no-result cannot prove full discharge because the locator is not advertised as an archive of every former prisoner.
| Field or result | Meaning and limit |
|---|---|
| First name | First three letters are accepted with the complete last name. |
| DOC ID | Seven-digit state identifier and the best direct search key. |
| Location | Optional filter that may identify an institution or supervision office. |
| Custody or supervision entry | May represent prison, qualifying local custody, or community supervision. |
| Future release-date information | An administrative date that may change before release. |
| Past release information | Supports state departure but should be paired with actual-release records. |
A county-only detainee with no VADOC authority may never appear. In that case, use Virginia Jail VINE, the Northampton courts, and the Sheriff's release record. The full local-versus-state decision path appears on the Northampton County released inmates search page.
Actual VADOC Release Records
State release paperwork is stronger proof of actual departure than a future locator date. VADOC describes a signed, dated, and witnessed notification of release letter. Depending on the case, the packet can also include an Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole. Those papers identify whether release began a term of supervision or ended the relevant state custody term.
A focused VADOC request should include the DOC ID, sentencing court, institution if known, and date range. Ask for the notification of release letter and the applicable signed order or supervision conditions. If a certified or authenticated copy is required for a legal process, ask the custodian what is available. A court judgment proves what the court imposed, while VADOC records the administrative computation and actual state departure.

Northampton VADOC Date Changes
The state calculation begins with active time imposed by the court. VADOC then accounts for presentence jail credit, concurrent or consecutive terms, the applicable credit regime, earning class, disciplinary losses, restored credits, revocation time, other orders, and detainers. These variables explain why a displayed future date is not a promise.
| Event | Possible effect |
|---|---|
| Presentence jail credit | Credits eligible time already spent in custody. |
| Concurrent or consecutive terms | Changes how multiple sentences combine. |
| Earned-credit class | Changes the rate permitted by the governing sentence rules. |
| Disciplinary loss or restoration | Can move the computed date later or earlier. |
| Revocation or new court order | Can add active time or alter the controlling sentence. |
| Detainer | May change the destination even when the sentence end is correct. |
Virginia has older Good Conduct Allowance rules and post-1995 Earned Sentence Credit rules. The correct regime depends on offense and sentence facts. A broad statement that someone serves a fixed percentage is not safe for a person-specific calculation.
VADOC Release-Day Process
The VADOC facility-release guidance states that release occurs by 11:59 p.m. on the release date, weather permitting. It asks about approved pickup by family or friends or the use of public transportation. When needed, the institution's business office can arrange bus transportation. The process also covers the return of personal property, documents, and offender funds.

The captured official page applies to releases from VADOC institutions. Its transportation and property rules must not be presented as Eastern Shore Regional Jail policy.
- Projected date
- A future administrative calculation that can change.
- Actual release
- The completed departure documented by state status and dated paperwork.
- Probation
- Court-ordered community supervision that may follow or replace incarceration.
- Parole
- Conditional release for an eligible case under Parole Board authority.
Northampton Supervision After VADOC
A person may be physically out of prison while remaining under VADOC authority. Northampton County is served by Accomack Probation & Parole, District 4. The office can route verification of a public supervision entry and explain the appropriate state contact. It cannot certify the release of a county detainee who never entered VADOC authority.

State custody notifications use VADOC's separate NAAVI process. A local Virginia Jail VINE enrollment does not follow the person automatically into VADOC. Registration may be needed again after the state assumes custody, and VADOC notifications cease after release. The signed conditions then show whether probation or parole continues.
NAAVI may provide advance notice and a later notice of actual release. Those events should not be merged. VADOC state notices can also address transfer, death, escape or recapture, name change, work release, parole interview, and parole decision. Advance release notice is generally about 30 days before the anticipated event, while an actual-release notice states that VADOC custody ended. Neither proves that every supervision term ended.
When the locator and paperwork differ, preserve both sources and their dates. A daily locator update may lag a witnessed order, or a projected date may change after discipline, restored credit, revocation, or a new court direction. Ask VADOC to explain the state computation and the sentencing court to explain its judgment. Each office should address the fact it created.
Northampton State Custody Classification
No Virginia Department of Corrections prison operates in Northampton County. The institution assigned to a Northampton-sentenced person depends on VADOC classification and placement, so no single prison should be described as the county's state facility. The offender search and DOC ID travel with the individual. An institution name can change without signaling release.
A Northampton defendant can appear under VADOC authority while still physically held at Eastern Shore Regional Jail. The locator includes qualifying people in local and regional jails, along with state institutions, institutional hospitals, CCAP placements, and district supervision. Read the displayed location and authority together. A local-jail location in a VADOC result is not proof that the person has returned to county-only custody.
When ESRJ transfers a person after a longer state commitment, preserve the local release or movement record and then open the state record. The Sheriff's destination field establishes the handoff. VADOC establishes later placement, calculation, and state release. If the person later enters District 4 supervision, that entry shows continuing state authority after physical prison departure.
ESRJ may correctly state that its custody ended on one date while VADOC correctly shows incarceration beginning or continuing. Those records mark consecutive parts of the same custody chain. Only the later VADOC actual-release paperwork closes the state-prison chapter.
Northampton Sources Before VADOC
A state custody chain often begins with the official Eastern Shore Regional Jail record. Use the Northampton FOIA instructions to request its transfer destination, then compare the sentence through the Northampton Circuit Court. These local sources establish the handoff into VADOC, not the later state release.
